BIO
Laina Brown is a Winnipeg-based Director of Photography and Associate Member of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers. She is the head of cinematography and co-owner of Folks Films with her brother Taylor Brown. Her television and series work includes the CBC web series Les faillites d’Astrid, seasons 1 and 2 of Big Small Town for Bell Fibe TV1, the unscripted series Ghost Kitchens, and numerous comedy specials for Counterfeit Comedy and Folks Films Studios Inc. She is also the cinematographer on the feature documentary The Art of Social Architecture, set for release in 2026.
As Fine Art student, she specializing in fine art filmmaking. Laina has collaborated with artists including Dominique Rey on the film MOTHERGROUND, which premiered at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. She was the film director and cinematographer for RWB’s 2025/2026 film “Between Breath”. Folks Films short film Model Citizens won the Golden Sheaf Award for Comedy, and Phenomena won Best Cinematography at the Manitoba 48 Hour Film Festival, screening nationally at TIFF Bell Lightbox. The series Big Small Town won Best Comedy at T.O.Webfest.
Alongside her production work, Laina has collaborated with Juno winning/nominated artists Boy Golden, Leith Ross, and The Fretless. She teaches cinematography through Film Training Manitoba and the Winnipeg Film Group and serves on the CSC Field of View Mentorship committee, supporting greater access and representation in Canadian cinematography.
